University Munich  Faculty of Design

The historic armoury of the Bavarian Army in Neuhausen-Nymphenburg dating from 1865 was recently used by the Technical University of Munich. It now houses the Faculty of Design of the University of Applied Sciences.

The Faculty of Design at the Munich University of Applied Sciences is the largest state institution for academic design research and teaching in Munich. It offers the Bachelor's degree course in "Design" with the networked degree courses in photographic, industrial and communication design, as well as the Master's degree course in "Advanced Design" with a focus on "Social Change and Transformative Processes".

Technical information

The 142 metre long and 47 metre wide historic brick building was given a pavilion in the northwest. The pavilion, which is glazed all around, offers visitors a view of the historic brick façade from inside and, with its filigree supports, forms the basis for the geometrically complex roof construction.

The almost 700 square meter roof cladding consists of aluminum profiles with a mixed coating of polyamide and polyurethane. The underside is made of anodised and perforated aluminium. This continues inside the pavilion. The holes are used to let the sound into the acoustic fleece behind and the acoustic insulation.

A particular challenge was to ensure that all the corrugations continued continuously over the roof and the ridges. The actual functional roof is located under the visible roof cladding, which protects the pavilion from precipitation.
